“สามก๊ก” ของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง (หน)นอกจากนี้ยังมีบทมโหรีตับจูล่งที่ร้องกันแพร่หลาย และบทอื่นๆ อีก เคยฟังเล่ากันมาว่า ท่านผู้ใหญ่แต่ก่อนนิยมอ่านสามก๊ก ยิ่งท่านผู้มีหน้าที่เกี่ยวข้องรบทัพจับศึกด้วยแล้ว
ว่ากันว่าถือเป็นหนังสือสำคัญเรื่องหนึ่งที่จะต้องอ่านและรู้ไว้ เพราะนับถือกันว่าเป็นเรื่องให้ความรู้และแง่คิด ในกลและยุทธวิธีต่างๆ ดูเหมือนตอนที่อ่านกันสนุกสนานมากก็เห็นจะเป็นตอนสุมาอี้กับขงเบ้งซ้อนกลศึกกัน
ที่จำกันได้มากก็คือตอนที่ขงเบ้งถอยทัพไม่ทันจึงใช้กลอุบายเปิดประตูเมือง แล้วแต่งตัวขึ้นไปดีดกระจับปี่อยู่กับเด็ก ๒ คนบนหอรบ ทำทีลวงสุมาอี้ให้ถอยทัพ ตรงนี้รู้สึกว่า คล้ายกับคราวเจ้าพระยาจักรีและเจ้าพระยาสุรสีห์ลวงอะแซหวุ่นกี้ เมื่อตั้งรักษาเมืองพิษณุโลกในปลาย พ.ศ. ๒๓๑๘ สมัยกรุงธนบุรี ด้วยเห็นเหลือกำลังที่จะรักษาเมืองไว้ คิดจะถอยทัพจากพิษณุโลก จึงให้เอาปี่พาทย์ขึ้นไปตีตามป้อม
ลวงให้ข้าศึกเข้าใจว่าคิดจะต่อสู้อยู่ในเมืองนานวัน แต่แล้วก็ทิ้งเมืองตีฝ่าหนีออกไป กลยุทธ์แบบนี้
ถ้าเจ้าพระยาจักรีและเจ้าพระยาสุรสีห์ไม่เคยทราบเค้าเรื่องในสามก๊กตอนขงเบ้งลวงสุมาอี้นี้มาก่อน
ก็ต้องหมายความว่า ท่านแม่ทัพทั้ง ๓ บังเอิญมามีความคิดตรงกันเข้าอย่างน่าประหลาด
และตอนสุมาอี้ถูกขงเบ้งลวงให้ถอยทัพนี้ มีผู้เอามาร้อยกรองเป็นลำนำขับร้องทางสำนวนกลอนไม่สู้ไพเราะ แต่จำกันได้แพร่หลายว่า โยธาฮาเฮบ้างเสสรวล ขับครวญตามภาษาอัชฌาสัย ร้องเป็นลำนำทำนองใน เรื่องขงเบ้งเมื่อใช้อุบายกล ขึ้นไปนั่งบนกำแพงแกล้งตีขิม พยักยิ้มให้ข้าศึกนึกฉงน พวกไพรีมิได้แจ้งแห่งยุบล ให้เลิกทัพกลับพลรีบหนีไป สามสุมาข้าศึกนึกฉงน คร้ามในกลขงเบ้งเก่งใจหาย เคยเสียทัพยับแยบแทบตัวตาย สุมาอี้นึกหน่ายฉงนความ “สามก๊ก” ของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง (หน) นอกจากนั้นในคำนำหนังสือสามก๊ก
สำนักพิมพ์อุดมจัดพิมพ์จำหน่ายเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๗ ก็ได้กล่าวถึงความสำคัญของเรื่องนี้ไว้ว่า “แต่ถ้าว่าถึงเนื้อเรื่องบางตอนในสามก๊กแล้ว เข้าใจว่าน่าจะได้มาเป็นต้นเค้าในวรรณคดีไทยบางเรื่องและบางตอน เช่นในเรื่องพระอภัยมณี ท่านมหากวีเอกสุนทรภุ่ได้พูดถึงมหิงขสิงขรว่า พอได้ยนเสียงระฆังข้างหลังเขา เห็นผู้เฒ่าออกจากชะวากผา ดูสรรพางค์ร่างกายแก่ชรา แต่ผิวหน้านั้นละม้ายคล้ายทารก ข้อความตรงนี้คล้ายกับที่กล่าวถึงผู้วิเศษ ที่มาบอกตำรายาแก่เตียวก๊กหรือจางเจี๊ยะ หัวหน้าโจรโพกผ้าเหลืองในเรื่องสามก๊ก และมีผู้นำเอาเนื้อเรื่องบางตอนในสามก๊ก มาแต่งเป็นบทขับร้องก็หลายตอน บางตอนก็เป็นที่นิยมกันแพร่หลายมาก เช่น ตอนจิวยี่รากเลือดว่า แสนสงสารเจียวยี่คราวนี้หนอ ระทดท้อเสียใจให้สะอื้น กำเริบฤทธิ์เกาทัณฑ์สู้กลั้นกลืน ลุกขึ้นยืนร้องว่าสุราลัย บังคับข้าให้มาเกิดประเสริฐสิทธิ์ สู่สถิตใต้หล้าสุธาไหว ปราบศัตรูสู้สงครามไม่คร้ามใคร สถิตในกังตั๋งฝั่งนที เหตุไฉนให้ขงเบ้งเก่งฉกาจ ล่อเป็นทาสเสียกลจนป่นปี้ ประกาศก้องร้องขึ้นได้สามที โรคทวีเสียวซาบปราบฤทัย กำเริบฤทธิ์พิษเกาทัณฑ์เข้าบรรจบ ล้มสลบนิ่งแน่หมอแก้ไข พอรู้สึกนึกแค้นแน่นหัวใจ โลหิตไหลอ้าปากรากกระจาย สู้แข็งขืนยืนตรงดำรงจิต ดวงชีวิตจะวินาศลงขาดหาย อายุได้สามสิบเจ็ดเศษวันตาย แสนเสียดายคนดีเจียวยี่เอย. “สามก๊ก” ของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง (หน)อวดรู้อวดหลักฮักฮึก ข้าเคยพบรบศึกมาหลายยก จะเข้าออกยอกย้อนผ่อนปรน เล่ห์กลเรานี้อย่าวิตก ทั้งพิชัยสงครามสามก๊ก ได้เรียนไว้ในอกสารพัด ยายกลับไปทูลพระเจ้าป้า ว่าเรารับอาสาไม่ข้องขัด ค่ำวันนี้คอยกันเป็นวันนัด จะเข้าไปจับมัดเอาตัวมา” พึงเห็นได้ในบทละครนี้ว่า ถึงรัชกาลที่ ๒ หนังสือสามก๊กที่แปลเป็นภาษาไทยได้อ่านกันจนนับถืออยู่แล้ว สมกับที่อ้างว่าแปลในรัชกาลที่ ๑ ใช่แต่เท่านั้น มีเค้าเงื่อนที่จะสันนิษฐานต่อไปอีกว่า ความนับถือเรื่องสามก๊กดังในพระราชนิพนธ์นั้น เป็นมูลเหตุให้แปลหนังสือพงศาวดารจีนเรื่องอื่นๆ ในรัชกาลภายหลังต่อมา ๑ กับเรื่องสามก๊กเรื่อง ๑ โปรดฯ ให้สมเด็จพระเจ้าหลานเธอ กรมพระราชวังหลังทรงอำนวยการแปลเรื่องไซ่ฮั่น และให้เจ้าพระยาพระคลัง (หน) อำนวยการแปลเรื่องสามก๊ก คำที่เล่ากันมาดังกล่าวนี้ ไม่มีในจดหมายเหตุ แต่เมื่อพิเคราะห์ดูเห็นมีหลักฐานควรเชื่อได้ว่าเป็นความจริง ด้วยเมื่อในรัชกาลที่ ๑ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก ทรงเอาเป็นพระราชธุระขวนขวายสร้างหนังสือต่างๆ ขึ้นเพื่อประโยชน์สำหรับพระนคร หนังสือซึ่งเป็นต้นฉบับตำรับตำราในกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์นี้ ทั้งที่รวบรวมของเก่าที่แต่งใหม่ และที่แปลมาจากภาษาต่างประเทศ เกิดขึ้นในรัชกาลที่ ๑ มีมาก แต่ว่าในสมัยนั้นเป็นหนังสือเขียนในสมุดไทยทั้งนั้น จึงไม่มีลายลักษณ์อักษรเป็นสำคัญว่าแปลเมื่อใด ถึงกระนั้นก็ดี มีเค้าเงื่อนอันส่อให้เห็นชัดว่า หนังสือเรื่องไซ่ฮั่นกับเรื่องสามก๊กแปลเมื่อในรัชกาลที่ ๑ ทั้ง ๒ เรื่อง เป็นต้นว่าสังเกตเห็นได้ในเรื่องพระอภัยมณีที่สุนทรภู่แต่ง ซึ่งสมมติให้พระอภัยมณีมีวิชาชำนาญการเป่าปี่ ก็คือเอามาแต่เตียวเหลียงในเรื่องไซ่ฮั่น ข้อนี้ยิ่งพิจารณาดูคำเพลงปี่ของเตียวเหลียงเทียบกับคำเพลงปี่ของพระอภัยมณี ก็ยิ่งเห็นได้ชัดว่า ถ่ายมาจากกันเป็นแท้ ด้วยเมื่อรัชกาลที่ ๑ สุนทรภู่เป็นข้าอยู่ในกรมพระราชวังหลัง คงได้ทราบเรื่องไซ่ฮั่นมาแต่เมื่อแปลที่วังหลัง ส่วนเรื่องสามก๊กนั้น เค้าเงื่อนก็มีอยู่เป็นสำคัญในบทละครนอกเรื่องคาวี ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยทรงพระราชนิพนธ์บทหนึ่งว่า . . . “สามก๊ก” ของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง (หน) ต้นตำนานของหนังสือสามก๊กนั้น ทราบว่าเดิมเรื่องสามก๊กเป็นแต่นิทานสำหรับเล่ากันอยู่ก่อน เมื่อถึงสมัยราชวงศ์ถัง (พ.ศ. ๑๑๖๑ – ๑๔๔๙) เกิดมีการเล่นงิ้วขึ้นในเมืองจีน พวกงิ้วก็ชอบเอาเรื่องสามก๊กไปเล่นด้วยเรื่องหนึ่ง ต่อมาถึงสมัยราชวงศ์หงวน (พ.ศ. ๑๘๒๐ -๑๙๑๐) การแต่งหนังสือจีนเฟื่องฟูขึ้น มีผู้ชอบเอาเรื่องพงศาวดารมาแต่งเป็นเรื่องหนังสืออ่าน ที่ได้รับการแปลจากภาษาต่างประเทศเป็นภาษาไทย หนังสือสามก๊กนี้เป็นความเรียงที่ไพเราะงดงามสละสลวย และได้รสทางวรรณคดีเป็นอย่างดี มีลักษณะพิเศษเฉพาะจนกระทั่งกลายเป็นแบบฉบับในการแปลหนังสือพงศาวดาร และบันเทิงคดีของจีนเรื่องอื่นๆ ในยุคต่อๆ มา หนังสือเรื่องสามก๊ก มีตำนานและความเป็นมาอย่างไร สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ได้ทรงเรียบเรียงไว้เป็นหนังสืออีกเล่มหนึ่ง
